Artist Statement
Julie Edgar is a contemporary oil painter based in Sydney, Australia which will always be the Eora Nation of the Gadigal people. Her practice is located within the genre of landscape painting and her inspiration is taken from the landscapes of the Hawkesbury River, Pittwater and the Northern Beaches.
Julie spends a lot of time with her family sailing on the waterways of Pittwater and the Hawkesbury experiencing the serenity and tranquility of these spiritual places.
Her paintings are neither representational nor abstract however they communicate her connection to these places. The scenes depicted are pared down and are minimal to include only the significant elements of the landscape being light, weather and water. Julie is particularly fascinated by the unpredictability of these landscapes along with the ephemeral and transient effects of light.
Romantic Artists from the 18th century have influenced her work particularly the work of Caspar David Friedrich and JMW Turner. Julie’s paintings capture the feeling of being in the landscape, in particular the ethereal, emotional and spiritual connection she experiences in these environments.
I wish to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land in which I create, Guringai country on the land of Garigal or Caregal people of the Eora Nation and pay my respects to their elders, both past and present .
